Acupuncture is a treatment that can be administered for many problems such as pain. It has been practiced for thousands of years and has proven helpful in addressing a wide variety of conditions. At Health Advantage Physical Medicine, we have been sharing the benefits of acupuncture with residents of Pasadena, CA for many years.

HOW ACUPUNCTURE WORKS

This ancient practice involves the insertion of tiny, thin needles into the skin. As a part of traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture is based on the theory that humans have an energy flow, or qi, that has pathways through the body. If there is a problem with that flow, it can be improved by using acupuncture at specific points in the body. There are more than 2,000 of these points that are connected by qi pathways. When a needle is placed into one of these points, it is said to open the pathway again, allowing for uninhibited energy flow.

One of the ways that modern medicine has found that acupuncture works are by getting endorphins to flow through the body. The use of needles stimulates the body to produce endorphins. This then interrupts the processing of pain, leading to increased comfort and mobility.

GETTING ACUPUNCTURE

Many people are reluctant to try acupuncture because they fear the use of needles. However, these needles are hair-thin and are barely felt when inserted. There may be a small amount of pain as each of the needles is inserted. Many people say that getting acupuncture makes them feel relaxed while other people report feeling energized. When you first visit our office, our physical medicine practitioner will assess your condition to determine whether or not acupuncture is right for you.
